Who Is Behind Resonant Roots? The Institutions and Partners

Behind Resonant Roots is a collaboration connecting art institutions, cultural organisations and archives working across different national and disciplinary contexts. The project explores the contributions of Sinti and Roma artists to European art and cultural history through exhibitions, research and the presentation of archival materials.

The project is led by the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, in collaboration with the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC). It is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation (Kulturstiftung des Bundes).

The project brings together partners whose work spans contemporary art, film, cultural heritage, historical research and Roma cultural production. The cooperation partners named in the project announcement are:

  • Deutsche Kinemathek, Berlin

  • Institute of Art History, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest

  • Museum of Modern Art (MSN), Warsaw

  • Ceija Stojka Fund, Vienna

  • European Roma Cultural Foundation (ERCF), Budapest

  • NS Documentation Centre, Munich

  • RomArchive – Digital Archive of the Roma

Each institution brings a distinct collection, archive, research perspective or field of expertise to the collaboration. Together, the partners create connections between artistic practice, historical documentation and cultural memory, helping to situate Sinti and Roma artistic contributions within broader European art history.

The collaboration also highlights the importance of working across institutional boundaries. Art collections, film archives, historical records and digital resources can offer different perspectives on artistic production and the ways it has been documented, preserved and presented. Bringing these resources into dialogue creates opportunities to explore connections that might otherwise remain dispersed across separate collections and national contexts.

Resonant Roots will take place at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin from 9 September to 12 December 2027. Further information about the exhibition and its programme will be announced by the organisers.
