The Artists of Resonant Roots: Sinti and Roma Art in Dialogue

Resonant Roots brings together works by Sinti and Roma artists in dialogue with works by non-Roma artists and selected works from the collection of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. The exhibition and research project explores the contributions of Sinti and Roma artists to modern and contemporary European art and cultural history.

The artists currently listed for the project represent a range of artistic practices and generations. The announced names are Daniel Baker, Mirosław Bałka, Charly Bechaimont, Monica Bonvicini, Anna Ehrenstein, emet ezell, Robert Gabris, Rebecca Horn, Dominique Hurth, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, Sigalit Landau, Delaine Le Bas, Lila Loisse, Miroslav Radu, Emilia Rigová, Ulrike Rosenbach, Romy Rüegger, Selma Selman, Wael Shawky, Hito Steyerl and Ceija Stojka.

By placing works by Sinti and Roma artists in dialogue with works by non-Roma artists, Resonant Roots explores artistic connections and influences within a broader European context. The project also brings archival material into new contexts, creating opportunities to reconsider how artistic practices, cultural memory and historical narratives intersect.

The project’s approach situates Sinti and Roma artistic production within the history of modern and contemporary art, rather than treating it as a separate or marginal field. Through the juxtaposition of artworks, collections and archival material, Resonant Roots invites audiences to reflect on how European art history is documented, interpreted and presented.

The list of artists is based on the project’s public announcement. The organisers note that some participations are still awaiting confirmation; the list should therefore be considered provisional.

Resonant Roots will be presented at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin from 9 September to 12 December 2027. Further information about the artists and their works will be announced as the project develops.
