EPICENTRE Partners: European Roma Cultural Foundation
The European Roma Cultural Foundation (ERCF), based in Budapest and led by Tímea Junghaus, initiates and coordinates EPICENTRE: Roma History of Contemporaneity in Central Europe. The Foundation has spent two decades developing the cultural and institutional conditions in which Roma contemporary art can be produced, researched, exhibited and understood.
Within EPICENTRE, ERCF leads the research and creation of the project's shared cultural-history timeline, bringing together the artistic and cultural trajectories of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. This work connects histories that have developed in different national contexts, creating a shared framework for understanding Roma artistic production as part of contemporary art history in Central Europe.
The project builds on ERCF's long-standing engagement with Roma contemporary art and cultural representation. By bringing together research, exhibitions, public discussion and education, EPICENTRE seeks to make artistic histories more visible and to establish connections between artists, institutions, archives and ideas across the region.
Budapest will also host EPICENTRE's two-day international conference, bringing together artists, curators, researchers and cultural thinkers from the four participating countries. The conference will provide a space to discuss the project's findings and consider how these different histories can be understood in relation to one another.
Four national trajectories come together through this collaboration. ERCF's role is to help research, connect and bring their shared cultural history into circulation.
