New publication by ERCF Board Member Angéla Kóczé explores Romani women’s experiences in neoliberal Europe
The European Roma Cultural Foundation warmly congratulates ERCF Board Member Angéla Kóczé on the publication of her new book, Romani Women at the Edge of Neoliberal Europe: Discursive Emancipation and Structural Violence, published by Manchester University Press.
The book brings together more than two decades of research, teaching and engagement with Romani women’s movements across Europe. It examines how the promises of equality, inclusion and human rights have often failed to dismantle the structural inequalities that continue to shape the everyday lives of Romani women.
Rather than treating Romani women as passive subjects of policy, Kóczé foregrounds their knowledge, political agency and lived experiences. The book explores how questions of race, gender, class and structural violence intersect, while also highlighting the intellectual and political contributions of Romani women to contemporary debates on democracy, justice and social transformation.
As Kóczé writes in the book’s foreword:
“This book grew out of more than two decades of thinking, writing, and working alongside Romani women whose lives, labor, and courage have shaped not only my research but also my understanding of what justice, care, and solidarity can mean.”
This perspective reflects a commitment that extends beyond academic research. It recognises knowledge as something produced collectively through lived experience, dialogue and long-term engagement with communities.
For the European Roma Cultural Foundation, this publication resonates strongly with our mission. Cultural power is not only expressed through artistic production, but also through research, critical scholarship and the creation of knowledge that challenges exclusion and expands public understanding of Romani experiences.
We are proud to celebrate this important achievement and congratulate Angéla Kóczé on the publication of this significant contribution to Romani Studies.
